Since first seeing the Karate Kid I have always been interested in martial arts but never found the time or the courage to actually go and try it. At 39 years of age, I thought that ship had long since sailed but I wanted both my daughters to be able to look after themselves and to do something physical that they could enjoy together.

Black Scorpion started running classes at the David Lloyd club in Warrington where my family and I were members. After about two months of watching the girls’ progress and seeing the amount of fun they were having, I asked Sensei Paul if I could join in and give it ago.

Three and half years after starting I was awarded my Black Belt at the same time as both my daughters. It was a massive family achievement and something I am immensely proud of.

I couldn’t have gotten to Black Belt if it wasn’t for the support of all the Instructors and fellow students. Being a member of Black Scorpion is just like being a member of a family, everyone supports each other, no egos just help, fun and a shared purpose. That purpose is to always try and is something the instructors instil in all their students.

Now that I have my Black Belt I have started a new journey and that is one of becoming an instructor. Being able to pass on what I know and seeing students young and old growing and improving each week is just an honour. Karate has given me so much; confidence, coordination, fitness and self-discipline. I am looking forward to the next step in my Karate journey.
